Does Free Will Exist?

The theory of evolution sought to explain how all living things adapt to their environment in order to survive. Structures still found in the human brain evolved to do just this. For example, the amygdala developed our ability to respond to threats and the optic tectum allows us to track moving objects. Human beings are the finest example of creatures whose adaptations seem to know no bounds. Our unparalleled success on this planet is perhaps, in part, due to our ancestors evolving a conscious. We gained self-awareness and can choose the way we react to our environment.

Or can we?

Does Free Will Exist? Arguments For And Against The Existence Of Free Will

Whether we maintain any degree of control over our mental functions answers the question: Does free will exist?

The majority of our thinking is subconscious. Thoughts that trespass into the mind as we attempt to sleep and slips-of-the-tongue act as unsettling reminders that we are unaware of the majority of our own cognition. It is estimated that we are actually aware of as little as 5% of our thoughts, and potentially even less.

Passive Brain Theory, led by psychology professor, Ezequiel Morsella, suggests that our subconscious thoughts drive actions and that the cognizant mind wrongfully credits itself with its control in the matter. If our conscious thoughts have been shaped by the subconscious, then the resulting behaviours should surely be classified as predetermined. In this case, the argument for free will is vanquished.

This theory is challenged in our ability to switch between ways of thinking and our resulting behaviours. If our thoughts were, in fact, determined by our subconscious, how and why can we behave in a certain way, only to change suit conceivably ‘at will’? Even though we are aware of only a fraction of our thoughts, those which break through to the conscious mind seem to be under our control and are able to be manipulated by the individual as they flit between potential outcomes.

Importantly, this allows us to take authority over the negative thought patterns that prevent us from reaching our potential and hinder our personal and professional success. Most of us believe that our ‘free will’ grants us this opportunity, however, some would still argue that the subconscious is driving change.

As research continues, maybe one day we will have a more definitive answer as to what drives our behaviour, however, in changing our mindset, the argument over “Does free will exist” becomes insignificant. Whether we have chosen to make a change, or whether our subconscious has made the choice for us, only one thing really matters: a positive mindset improves our physical and mental well-being.

The 6 Laws Of The Mind

The new course developed by Dr. Jan C. Wulff, The 6 Laws Of The Mind, seeks to give participants the tools to take authority over their thoughts. The idea that ‘you are what you think’ allows us to engage in thought scrutiny and undertake mind maintenance. Through guided exercises, Dr. Jan coaches individuals in the art of recognising negative thought patterns and replacing them with more constructive alternatives.

The fourth module, entitled ‘The Law Of Freedom’, proposes that we are able to think whatever we choose. Dr. Jan develops the participant’s ability to set themselves a goal and approach it with the right attitude. With a positive mindset and determination, the challenges we set ourselves become attainable, despite previous failings.

The 6 Laws Of The Mind is the ideal course for anyone who suffers from stress, seeking to inspire change. A break from work or breathing exercises merely offer a sticking plaster over a larger problem. Changing your mindset provides a long-term solution to coping with mental pressures.
