Why Asking For Help Is The Strongest Act

Human behaviour is puzzling. We want to share happiness and excitement with everybody around us, yet when we are suffering – and we need the support of others the most – we have a tendency to hide ourselves away and bottle up our emotions. Many of us believe that unloading our problems on someone else would be an imposition, whereas others feel that admitting they are experiencing stress or sadness would be a sign of weakness. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Asking for help takes strength and courage.

The Benefits Of Asking For Help

We Can Do More Together Than We Can Alone

The expression ‘a problem shared is a problem halved’ has stood the test of time for good reason. When your emotions take a hit, your productivity, outlook on the world and willingness to share all suffer. Yet when we do reach out, it quickly becomes apparent that we should have done this so much sooner. Discussing a problem or a bad mood with someone immediately eases the load. Your confidant may offer practical suggestions as to how to overcome a challenge, encourage you to engage in behaviours that will lift your mood and, most importantly, be pleased that you came to them for help.

Connecting With Others

Humans are sociable beings. When we suppress our emotions or face challenges alone, we miss out on the opportunity to connect with others. Countless studies have found that loneliness heightens feelings of vulnerability and negatively impacts psychological and physiological well-being. Maintaining an open dialogue with a friend, relative, therapist or life coach reduces the likelihood of returning to an isolated or depressed state of mind. Remember – we are inbuilt with the desire to help others, so asking for help is never a burden.

Road To Happiness

If you feel that bad moods or stress brought on by challenges in your personal or professional life are negatively changing your overall outlook, accepting help is a must. By asking for help, you have acknowledged that you are not in a good headspace and have made the first step towards a brighter tomorrow. In talking to someone else, your shared goal becomes increasing your happiness. By doing this, any challenges that you need to overcome become more manageable. A common miscalculation when problem solving is attempting to rectify something when you’re not in the right frame of mind. This presents further barriers and resolutions are not easily found. When your primary goal is to change your mindset, everything else falls into place.

Explore What Has Triggered Your Negative Emotion

Mindset coaching sessions with Dr. Jan get to the root of your negative emotions. Feelings of worry, stress and sadness are not caused by outside events, but by the way we think about such occurrences. Emotions may be triggered by situations, however, it is our unconscious thought patterns that give rise to feelings of negativity. The good news – if it is our thoughts that cause our bad moods, we also have the power to reverse such feelings. If we can isolate a person, action or event that has subconsciously triggered a negative thought, we are able to replace these automatisms with positive alternatives. Over time, this results in a change in mindset and increases happiness. All of this becomes possible by asking for help.
